Ten more travel firms have joined the government’s “Impressive Vietnam” campaign, offering discounts of more than 35 percent on domestic tour packages.

Thirty travel firms are now participating in the national tourism-stimulus campaign, designed to help Vietnam’s travel sector ride out the global economic crisis.

Tour companies are able to offer generous discounts after national flag carrier Vietnam Airlines offered discounted air fares to certain travel agencies, Young Generation Travel Company deputy director Tran The Dung told Tuoi Tre last week.

The lower airfares, on offer until September 30, are available on domestic routes between Ho Chi Minh City, Hanoi and central destinations, Dung said.

Vietnam’s tour operators have this year switched their focus to the domestic market, after the number of international arrivals fell sharply because of the global downturn and the swine flu outbreak.

In spite of the global economic slump, the number of domestic travelers in Vietnam increased by 12 percent in the first five months of this year from the same period last year.
